day 5 of 50: raven sheds a feather

Jacqueline: bent & broken feather

Amichai: A large black raven flew over the pink stones of the sealed Gate of Mercy today, on the Eastern edges of Jerusalem's Old City. A sealed gate, the one from which, one day, it is believed, the Messiah will enter the new age of peace. But for now, in fear of salvation, the gate is shut, guarded, surrounded by graves, overlooking the Mount of Olives, the vast valley, visited by ravens, mourners, pilgrims, me. When will it be open? When will doves fly through its open arms?
Today is Hod of Hesed: The beauty of kindness, the mystery of love-in-the-making. This fifth day of the counting, of hope, on the eve of the crossing of the Sea of Reeds, bears witness to the breathtaking beauty of grief, the hostile heartache of that which is shut and wants so badly to open:arms held tight to the body, eyes shut, hearts afraid to touch, sealed gate. I'm not trying too hard - there really is something beautiful in this not-yet-there, state of yearning, this closeness longing to be open. Raven flying about, tell me: is the flood of fear over yet? are we there yet? It sheds a feather on the nearest grave. 45 to go.
