day 4 of 50

Jacqueline: a phone
a puddle
— an accident waiting to happen

Amichai: I live in perpetual fear, or perhaps subtle awareness, that accidents are waiting to happen. Not just the small ones, like losing my phone or not finding my keys, but also the bigger ones, the great calamity, the car crash, the deportation. It's not easy to admit but I know I'm not the only one. In some ways, that fear is what propels so much of modern day Zionism and Jewish identity. It's not healthy. But it's real, a real wound that we carry with us, a psychic fear.
Today, day 4 of the count, is the 11th of April. On this day in 1945 my father was liberated from Buchenwald, one of Germany's worse concentration camps. We celebrate this as his real birthday and later today I will drive him and my mother out to the forest of Yad Vashem for a quiet moment of satisfaction. "The wounds never go away", he told me yesterday. We live with our fears, memories, broken promises that 'everything is going to be alright' and hope for the best. Avoid puddles. Don't keep waiting for the tragedy to happen. Wasted energy. Caution is good, eternal fear is crippling. Today's count is Netzach of Hesed - the Eternity of Kindness: The big picture if love. Fear less. I'll try. Mazal Tov, Abba.
